WEDNESDAY March 20, 2013, 7:30-10pmANNUAL SONGNET AWARDS NIGHT and SHOWCASE at the Coffee Gallery. If you're in L.A., and released a CD in the last year, PLEASE let us know so we can recognize you at this very special showcase event! We know of at least three artists who released CDs last year but they have not contacted us! We want to award you! Unlike the big production awards in which everyone seems to ask each other 'why did they get all the awards again?' or 'why did he jump up and interrupt her acceptance speech' or just simply channel flip trying not to be bored, the annual SongNet Award goes to those artists that have poured out their energy, blood, sweat, souls, and creativity into a CD package of songs for all to enjoy. If that's you this year, you're a winner. Tell us. Please email Jimi directly: jimi@songnet.INFO. The SongNet Songwriter's Showcase is hosted by Jimi Yamagishi and Melissa Thatcher. The Showcase features many different songwriters from local talent to internationals passing through Los Angeles. Sign up early if you want to play- 2 songs or 10 minutes per artist! Terry Kirkman’s song "Cherish", along with several others like "Everything That Touches You", “Requiem For The Masses”, and "Six Man Band" are iconic entries in the songbook of American culture. As part of the legendary vocal group “The Association” he’s performed on the Ed Sullivan, Andy Williams, Smothers Brothers shows, American Bandstand, Hullabaloo, Shindig, and many more. Based in Los Angeles, they worked folk clubs, high schools, jr. highs, colleges rock clubs, proms and parties, & held 2 attendance records at Bob Stane’s Ice House- the highest and the lowest. Their first big hit “Along Comes Mary” was actually a B side, & was followed with “Cherish” which went to #1 Touring extensively, they played the Philippines for the first time and discovered “No Fair at All” had been a #1 hit there. Their stunning set to open the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 was left out of the festival’s film version, which made legends of acts like Jimi Hendrix and The Who. Recently Clinical Director for MAP, the Musicians Assistance Program, Terry is now semi-retired, writing poems, songs, books and blogging on the Huffington post. With his knowledge & experience (oh yeah, he played with Frank Zappa in Jr College) you KNOW he will provide PRICELESS insight into where the industry has been, where it’s headed, & what it means to YOU. Jackie Shaw! In the early 70’s, a young actress and musician co-wrote several songs for a musical production with a well known and respected songwriter in New York. Hearing the production was scrapped, she moved on to other things, until one day a friend said: “You have to come see this new Broadway Show!” There, on stage, she heard HER songs coming back at her. She immediately called her co writer and exclaimed :“Hi! I Just saw The Wiz and our songs are in….” Them she heard, “Those are NOT OUR songs…(click).” First hand experience can be a great motivator. Jackie Shaw now understood the importance of getting the BUSINESS side of the craft in order, and to have an understanding of how the “starmaker machinery” really works. After working as Director of Promotions for ESP Records, Jackie relocated to L.A. with the promise of a record deal, and found a “daygig” with an attorney. With a renewed clarity of purpose, she honed her negotiation skills moving on to the healthcare industry before establishing herself at Warner, and later Fox, as the manager of legal rights and clearances. Always an artist advocate , she is a mentor to many, having “been there and done that”, on both sides of the mic. Jackie Shaw is someone you NEED to know, and she will be coming to answer your questions and LISTEN to you and your music. |

WEDNESDAY October 20, 2010Hope you’re havin’ fun! Our October 20 showcase will be a little different. For October 20th, we have been pre-empted by… The Legendary John McEuen! Check out http://www.johnmceuen.com/bio_jm.html If you’re either too young to know about him or lived in a cave since 1966. So, yes, it’s a HONOR to be bumped by him. The show may have sold out by the time you read this. Besides, you’re artists too & NEED to play. SO, Most of you know Duane Thorin runs a little gathering at the Coffee Gallery FRONTstage Wednesday nights. We’ve talked with him & he’s graciously working with us to share that stage with us on October 20th. Because he also has regulars & some sing-along fans, we may limit our artists to ONE song if the lineup is too tight, but come prepared to do your usual two. Also, the format is a little looser, so come prepared to also jam along, play with percussion toys & have FUN! If you have songs that would be fun to sing along, this is the op to do it. We will still need you to sign up to reserve your spot, we will still have our list, & still have all the usual information available about what’s next (an AMAZING website night November 3). And since you know how intimate the ‘Gallery is, odds are, even if you don’t get into the show you’ll hava chance to meet John McEuen yourself, & maybe even play to the overflow crowd that missed getting in too! This is a special night you will not want to miss even if you’re just coming to listen! Sign up to showcase@songnet.info Seeya there! Thanks!
