MOLLY MARRS - GUEST SPEAKER
WEDNESDAY November 7, 2018 , 7:30pm -10:00pm

Molly Marrs! When you watch her documentary short you will understand why she is passionate about being an artist and what has motivated her. Molly’s vision is to become a voice for those who don’t have one. Her mission is to be more than just a performer, but rather a “symbol of hope." Still in her 20s, she is already one of the few who has seen the top of the mountain & found the view Molly Marrsobscured by unexpected clouds.

Born in China, raised in Texas, and at eighteen years old moved to L.A. pursue music and acting, Molly Marrs has been around the world. In 2014 Molly had the opportunity to collaborate with Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men and Grammy Nominated producer Tommy Brown (TBHits), and recorded a five song EP that was never formally released. Next she worked with Italian DJ/Producer Otto Orlandi and the O Music Management, making guest appearances at Hakkasan and Omnia in Las Vegas, Temple Nightclub in Denver, and San Francisco. Represented by Bella Agency, Molly has multiple national commercials, a guest starring role on the Major Crimes television series, and print work for American brands in her portfolio.

She’s lived through the hitmaker machinery, seen bad deals, dealt with less than scrupulous industry types and more, and has quite a story to share. Her’s is the real story, the kind of stuff we ALL need to know. Yet her outlook is still genuine & joyful, because living the dream is just as amazing as finding the end of the rainbow.

Near Orange Grove & Fair Oaks off the 210 freeway

A BIT ABOUT OUR MOVE (We'll keep this here for a bit, in case you haven't stopped by the website recently)

Since 2001, The SongNet has had a home at the Coffee Gallery Backstage.

Bob Stane understands the value of what we do, & has seen several of our members move up into bigger & better things, even booking a few for sold out paying shows. When the coffeehouse part of the Coffee Gallery split off into it's own entity, Ken, then Julie, were also very accommodating & community spirited & helped us through situations when the Backstage was not available.

But many things have changed over the years. Though the economy suddenly took a huge upturn last year, it proved unsustainable & is crashing more rapidly than anyone thought possible. Prices are skyrocketing because the cost of doing business has risen to almost impossible levels for many.

Bob has to reconfigure how he does business, & the front half, being independent, will only be open in daytime hours starting April 2018.

We have touched the lives of thousands of local artists & TENS of thousands online, worldwide. Those of you who have been around for a few years have seen members cycling through, making critical connections & building careers so they no longer have time to come back. We've also seen many unsure of their place find what they need to establish & maximize their musical endeavors in the context of a comfortable supportive community.

When Linda Geleris started our "lil' songwriting family" in Sierra Madre, it was a loose collective of friends. As we grew, it became a bunch of volunteers, & currently an educational non-profit, with a volunteer staff.

Although we do have had a "membership level" that has helped cover some expenses, fact is, we're "out of pocket" for almost all we do, including rent & taxes. The tipjar helps, but we know many cannot even afford that & we understand. Interestingly, some of the most well attended workshops have the smallest tipjar revenue, because many starving for knowledge & connections are starving in other ways too.

We are exploring new ways to continue to fund what we do. STAY TUNED, AND WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR IDEAS.

The industry has changed beyond anything any of us could have imagined. Generating those revenues is different now, so focus & direction has to change with it. There is and always will be a need for what we do, at a cost most can afford. We try to and do many things for FREE for exactly that reason.

There are a LOT of factors we had to address in looking for a new place: Parking, Accessibility, Access, Use of sound equipment, Liability, & Cost. Rent that is "Practically Nothing" is still not "free". We looked for something sustainable. And speaking of sustainable, we're also looking for younger volunteers to pass the reins on to.

We're turning a page, not closing a book.

Participating with us, either through volunteer work, or by financially helping us (yeah, there's that need for money again) when you can, will keep our community together as we setup in our new location, or become mobile.

In the spirit of creativity, songwriting, and music,

Jimi, Steve & Tommy .

SHOWCASE

WEDNESDAY March 21, 2018, 7:30-10:00pm

ANNUAL SONGNET AWARDS NIGHT and SHOWCASE at the Coffee Gallery. If you're in L.A., and released a CD in the last year, PLEASE let us know so we can recognize you at this very special showcase event! We know of at least three artists who released CDs last year but they have not contacted us! We want to award you! Unlike the big production awards in which everyone seems to ask each other 'why did they get all the awards again?' or 'why did he jump up and interrupt her acceptance speech' or just simply channel flip trying not to be bored, the annual SongNet Award goes to those artists that have poured out their energy, blood, sweat, souls, and creativity into a CD package of songs for all to enjoy. If that's you this year, you're a winner. Tell us. Please email Jimi directly: jimi@songnet.INFO. The SongNet Songwriter's Showcase is hosted by Jimi Yamagishi. The Showcase features many different songwriters from local talent to internationals passing through Los Angeles. Sign up early if you want to play- 2 songs or 10 minutes per artist! No fee, no cover, in other words, FREE. (But buy some great coffee and a snack)

BEN MCLANE - GUEST SPEAKER
WEDNESDAY MARCH 7, 2018 , 7:30pm -10:00pm

How often have you heard “Get it in writing”, followed by “GET AN ATTORNEY”? if the wrong things are written, getting it in writing isn’t enough! Ben McLane is one of the most active attorneys in the music industry. You’ll find his name in almost every issue of Music Connection magazine, helping to get someone a deal. His website has some of the best free FAQ resources around. He gets it, & gets it done. As the former head of business affairs/CFO for JWP-USA/BMG Records, working legal and business affairs at Rhino Records, Priority Records and as a talent scout for Sire Records, Ben is one of the few attorneys who know both sides of the table well. With Attorney of the Year & more gold & platinum record awards than any wall can handle, his cred list reads like a Billboard top 40 chart. We suggest reading the articles on his site prior to coming so you don’t ask redundant questions. Then, you’ll have some serious specific questions to bring. The kind that usually cost money. Bring your demos & lyric sheets too. If he likes what he hears, you might be next on that client list! Anyone that can afford to give this much away is someone you NEED on YOUR side! He's releasing "Music Business In 10 Easy Lessons" this month as an e-book, & coming to share his knowledge, answer your questions & listen to your stuff… FREE!

TRAVIS ALLEN - GUEST SPEAKER
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2018 , 7:30pm -10:00pm

Part of the new cutting edge of the Nashville scene, TRAVIS ALLEN has written out "The Formula".

Let’s face it, we hear a lot of dumb songs that sell millions. The lyrics are so simple they sound like a 10 year old wrote the song. However, sometimes the hardest part of the craft is writing simple. If you’re an artist, your lyrics are the channel you speak to the world with. After working on thousands of songs & recordings, both at Nashville Tracks & beyond, Travis knows what it takes. It is vital to communicate your lyric in a way that it is not too personal, so that it is universally accepted. Working in the heart of TWO music centers, Nashville & LA, Travis has a unique perspective on this business & how MUSIC is always before BUSINESS if you’re looking for a lasting career in this industry. He’s heard the best, & as an artist himself he knows what happens when the “label system” doesn’t quite deliver the dream.Working In A&R, he understands why some artists are commercially successful, while others, sometimes with more talent, don’t quite “make it”.AND…

HE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR STUFF!

Bring your demos, notepads & dreams to this FREE one-on-one session with TRAVIS ALLEN. You’ll see for yourself how Nashville ain’t just your daddy’s country music any more!

ALEX DEL ZOPPO - GUEST SPEAKER
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 6, 2017 , 7:30pm -10:00pm

Alex Del ZoppoALEX DEL ZOPPO:
FLASHBACK. Woodstock 1969, and the very first band was Sweetwater, with Alex on keys.

As one of the primary songwriters with plenty of live performances & airplay, he continued to study the craft & business of songwriting at UCLA, with John Braheny, Jai Josefs, Harriet Schock & others. Alex established the Songwriter's Co-Op workshops with Franklin Spicer specializing in "the Anatomy of a Hit", a deconstructive process popularized by LASS & other songwriting organizations. This led to the creation of an online series called "Songwriter's Vantage" and involvement with several songwriting competitions including UNISONG. In 2003, he founded Tuneworks, an intuitive approach to songwriting, & he's also a constant presence in the L.A. songwriting scene, keeping up with all that is going on, sharing both his knowledge AND keyboard chops with his friends playing on the circuit.

TODAY. Coffee Gallery Backstage 2017. Stories from experience, hit songwriting tips, and a little bit of anatomy of a hit will all be part of this special night with the legendary Alex Del Zoppo! As always, we'll be listening to as much as we have time for, but PLEASE bring it on CD. Thanks!

Dave HarveyAs the director of public relations for Songsalive!, he co-produced two internationally distributed CD samplers, and was executive Director from 2008-2012. He’s coming to share his knowledge, answer your questions & listen to your stuff… FREE!

ED COHEN - SEMINAR AND SONG CRITIQUE
WEDNESDAY MARCH 1, 2017 , 7:30pm -10:00pm

Starting in Connecticut, Ed & his wife founded Miriam Cohen Productions, the largest independent music management /booking agency in New England, working with people like: Jerry Greenberg (later President of Atlantic Records) Craig McGregor (Foghat), Bobby Torello (Edgar Winter), Michael Bolton, and many others. Relocating to Southern California in 2008, at a chance meeting poolside at a Palm Springs resort, he met Robin McCauley, the lead singer of Survivor (now with the Michael Schenker Group). After a two-hour conversation, Robin said, ”You know what I’m most grateful about in life? That, at my age, I’m still privileged to perform and entertain audiences.“ Ed realized that as these artists aged, their valuable musical legacy could be lost forever. He began to revive and restore the 200 plus tapes from the groups he had worked with in Connecticut, and save them to digital media. During the process, he met other like-minded artists & producers. Pooling resources & experiences, they created “Rock Garden Conspiracy”, an all-encompassing music conglomerate covering management, a music label, publishing and music placement working to insure artists will receive fair and honest royalties and promotional efforts.

With over 50 years in the industry you can be sure he'll have some great advice & stories to tell, & with a company run from a true artist's perspective.

Bring your BEST on CD & lyric sheets for review! Priceless information, and tonight it’s FREE!

12TH ANNUAL SONGNET AWARDS NIGHT 2017

WEDNESDAY MARCH 15 2017 , 7:30-10:00pm

SHOWCASE: Songwriters Show at the Coffee Gallery. March 15th 2017 marks the 12 year of the SongNet Awards night, celebrating those in our community who released a PHYSICAL CD in 2016.

Releasing a physically recorded collection is one of the biggest milestones in an artist’s career. It is a validation that they have created something tangible that is worthy of being shared anywhere in the world.

SongNet recognizes the amount of effort, time & resources required to actually get that project to market, so the SongNet Awards nite has become an opportunity for artists to be recognized for their achievement at a special showcase in March, honoring artists who released a PHYSICAL CD in the previous year. To be recognized, artists need to email Jimi directly (jimi@songnet.info) no later than March 1st, & be available to perform 2 or 3 songs live @ the March showcase. Bringing some discs to sell is also important.

Congratulations to those of you that made it!
